End-stage renal disease (ESRD) is a condition where the kidneys can no longer function effectively, and patients require either dialysis or a kidney transplant for survival. Nurses caring for ESRD patients face unique challenges, such as managing complex treatment regimens, addressing the psychosocial needs of patients, and providing continuous monitoring of the patient’s clinical status (Olawale & Dada, 2024). In Kaduna State, like many other regions, healthcare systems are often overwhelmed by the increasing number of ESRD patients and a shortage of resources (Yakubu et al., 2023). Nurses in these settings must not only manage the technical aspects of dialysis but also provide emotional and psychological support to patients dealing with chronic illness (Okwuosa & Musa, 2023).
The challenges faced by nurses in managing ESRD patients in Kaduna State hospitals may be compounded by limited access to advanced treatment options, inadequate training, and insufficient support from multidisciplinary teams (Ahmed & Ibrahim, 2024). Furthermore, nurses may encounter difficulty in effectively communicating with patients about the need for long-term treatment and the importance of adherence to prescribed therapies. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the specific challenges faced by nurses in managing ESRD patients in Kaduna State hospitals and to suggest solutions that could enhance the quality of care.
Nurses caring for ESRD patients in Kaduna State hospitals often encounter significant challenges related to resource constraints, lack of training, and difficulties in patient education and adherence to treatment protocols. These challenges can negatively affect the quality of care provided and may lead to poor patient outcomes. There is a need to explore the challenges nurses face in managing ESRD patients to improve care strategies and patient outcomes.
This study will focus on nurses working with ESRD patients in Kaduna State hospitals, investigating the challenges they face and their impact on care quality. Limitations include the variability in experience and training among nurses, and the study may not capture all the challenges faced across different healthcare settings in the state.
